What the CBI Registry Shows

CBI describes its public site as the Colorado Convicted Sex Offender Search and warns that it does not include every convicted sex offender in Colorado. The public site does not post information for some misdemeanor-only sex offense convictions or juvenile adjudication categories. CBI also states that registry records are updated hourly and provides contact routes for incorrect information or more extensive registry questions.

Registry status can outlast a jail or prison release. A person may appear on the CBI registry long after leaving custody because registration duties can continue. The reverse is also true: a released person may not appear online because the offense category, juvenile status, public-posting rule, noncompliance status, or record restriction keeps the person outside the public web subset.

How to Search the Registry

Use the registry only when the question is whether a released person appears in the public Colorado registry subset.

1. Open the CBI Sex Offender Registry.
2. Review the search agreement and public-site limits before searching.
3. Search by name, location, or other fields the public interface provides.
4. Compare identifying details carefully before treating a result as the correct person.
5. If the registry result is missing, incomplete, or disputed, contact CBI or local law enforcement rather than assuming the person has no registry obligation.
6. For release date, release reason, bond, sentence discharge, or transfer destination, use the custody source that handled the release.

CBI Registry Source Card

CBI's search agreement says residents may contact a local police department, county sheriff, or CBI for a complete list of registered sex offenders in a city, county, or state. For Las Animas County custody history, contact the sheriff or court separately because registry staff are not the custodian of a county jail release record.

Registry vs Release Record

The registry answers a narrower question than the release record. A Las Animas County release record can show booking number, booking date, release date and time, release type, charges, arresting agency, bail, days served, or transfer destination. A CDOC offender record can show parole assignment, estimated mandatory release, sentence discharge, and current facility assignment. The CBI registry can show public registry information only when the person's offense and registration category qualify for online posting.

Photos and Public Limits

For some qualifying registry records, the CBI site may be a public photo or identity-verification channel. That does not make it a mugshot archive for all released people. The Las Animas County source set did not prove that local dated roster PDFs publish booking photos. If a booking photograph is needed for identity verification, request it from the record custodian under Colorado's criminal-justice records process and expect possible redaction or denial for sealed, juvenile, security-sensitive, victim-related, or other restricted material.

CBI Registry Limits

The CBI Sex Offender Registry is not a general released-inmate locator. It is an offense-specific public registry. CBI warns that the public site does not include all convicted sex offenders in Colorado, including some misdemeanor-only and juvenile adjudication categories. A person can be released and not appear in the public registry because the offense does not qualify for online posting, the person is not required to register, the record is outside the public subset, or the public record is restricted.

Las Animas Registry Photos

Registry photos should be kept separate from sheriff mugshots and CDOC offender photos. The Las Animas source set did not prove that local roster PDFs publish booking photos. A county booking photo, if maintained and releasable, is requested from the sheriff under CCJRA review. A CDOC photo belongs to a state-prison record. A CBI photo belongs only to a qualifying public registry record.

When a registry record and a release question overlap, use both sources for their own roles. Use CBI for registry status and posted registry details. Use the sheriff for a county jail release. Use CDOC for a prison release. Use the court docket for the sentence or order. Use VINE for alerts and custody status where supported. Use BOP or ICE only when those custody systems are involved.

If a public registry result looks wrong, CBI's public materials direct users to CBI or local law enforcement for correction or more complete registry information. That correction path is separate from a jail records request.

Final Registry Check

Before using the registry in a Las Animas County release workflow, decide whether the question is about custody or registry status. Custody is confirmed through the jail, court, CDOC, VINE, BOP, or ICE. Registry status is confirmed through CBI and, when needed, local law enforcement. Mixing those roles can lead to the wrong conclusion.

A public registry listing can support identity and public registry obligations, but it cannot explain why a person left jail, whether bond was posted, whether parole was granted, or whether a sentence was discharged. A missing public registry listing cannot prove that the person was not released. It can only show that the public CBI search did not return a listing under that search.

CBI's public registry materials allow a reader to use the state search and to contact CBI or local law enforcement when broader or corrected registry information is needed. For Las Animas County, that can mean the sheriff or local police department for local registry questions, while CBI remains the statewide public web channel. The registry contact path is separate from a jail release-record request.

Use the registry only when the offense category and public posting rules make it relevant. A general released-inmate search should start with the jail, court, CDOC, VINE, BOP, or ICE source that matches custody. Registry pages can help with qualifying public registry records and photos, but they cannot supply a complete release history.

Las Animas Registry Checklist

Use the CBI registry only after deciding that a registry search is relevant to the person's offense and public posting status. Save the name searched, location filters, and date checked. If no public result appears, do not treat that as a custody answer or release answer.

For release verification, return to the custody source. The sheriff confirms county jail release, CDOC confirms prison release, the court explains the case event, and VINE may help with status alerts. CBI confirms only public registry information.

If a registry entry includes a photo, treat it as a registry image. It is not proof that the sheriff publishes booking photos or that the release was recent in Las Animas County.
